Representatives of the constitutional and supreme courts of the EU Member States, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights will participate in a conference on 31 August and 1 September 2023. Their judicial dialogue will focus on the role of their respective courts in upholding the core values on which the European Union is founded, such as the rule of law and human rights. When should national diversity be set aside in favor of the unison of EU law? Conversely, when should EU law allow national diversity to widen? The conference is jointly organized by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Constitutional Court of Belgium, the Constitutional Court of Luxembourg, and the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and will take place at the Hoge Raad in The Hague.
The title of the conference is “EUnited in diversity II: The Rule of Law and Constitutional Diversity”. This event was intended as a sequel to the conference “EUnited in Diversity: between common constitutional traditions and national identities”, which was held in September 2021 in Riga (Latvia).
The conference will be opened by the Commissioner for Justice of the European Union, Didier Reynders, and the keynote speeches will be given by: the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Koen Lenaerts; the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Síofra O’Leary; and the President of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, Dineke de Groot. The conference will last two days and be divided into four panels.
